When considering what is important to the revitalization and attractiveness of a city, from an literary or artistic viewpoint, the novelist Morita Sohei (1881-1949) comes to mind. Born in the Sagiyama district of Gifu City, Morita was a leading disciple of the novelist Natsume Soseki. In 1973, the Morita Sohei Memorial Hall was constructed to honor his literary accomplishments. At the site are gardens and Sho-an, Morita's former residence. Due to deterioration of the buildings and surrounding gardens over the years, the author recently undertook a project to restore the site. Originally, Sho-an had been located on the banks of the Nagara River flowing through Gifu City. However, successive river management projects over the years have resulted in constraining the river to a single waterway. Consequently, Sho-an and its gardens are now located far away from the Nagara River. In order to restore the original riverside atmosphere of the site, a concept of a "Design for Place and Time" was adopted for this project. Rather than creating a new radical design, the guiding factor in the design was the recreation of the original, yet fresh sense of place and time. |
