In this paper, we discuss the dichotomy of `place / space' presented by Michel de Certeau. Here, the focus is on media and communication studies, especially referring to Harold A. Innis and Marshall McLuhan. We propose a hypothesis that `literacy' is profoundly intertwined with the concept of `place' which is constructed of well-ordered knowledge and information, but eventually produces the power to dominate our way of thinking by making our knowledge rigid.
