Among contemporary Caribbean writers, Phillips is distinguished by his deep insight into the postcolonial world. Diaspora, which considers the loosened relationships among the people of African descent in postcolonial societies, is one of major themes in Phillip’s works. The idea of diaspora is more widely recognized today since many writers of African descent criticize black essentialism.
